For the Dahlonega Gold Museum's 50th anniversary of being a Georgia State Historic Site a new Collector's coin was struck. I created the entire coin design that then was struck by Signature Coins. Here you can see the concept art, proof art, and finally one side of the finished coin. (Of course the finished coin you see I made into a necklace to wear)

I've gotten a little tired of being a 'proper lady' during the Haunted Dahlonega Tours I give as a fund raiser for the Friends of Dahlonega Gold Museum. So...... time for some 'naughty fun'!
I decided to go with the Cancan Dress seen during the 1830's and 1840's when the can-can was danced throughout the western world. Originally the cancan was danced by both sexes and was very acrobatic- not risque at all. Modern people tend to only think about the dance & dancers as something more sexual. That was not really the case. So on to the dress- the frilly petticoat goes to the floor and has 12 yards of lacy fabric to make the ruffles. All the satin and most of the lace came out of thrift stores over the years. The finished dress with all the layers has 9 yards of satins, 12 yards of lace fabric, 5 yards of lace, and is heavy! I did the pictures before making the embroidery on the top. On Jan 12th I had the pleasure of giving a fun program at the Senior Center for our local garden club- The Gold Diggers Garden Club. We painted stepping stones with 1 of 2 design choices- a funky fun chicken or busy bee's. Everyone brought what type of stepping stone (or other object) they wanted to paint on & I supplied everything else. Look at what was done! After making a unique pattern for BB-8 hats- it is time to SEW SEW SEW!
Find them here: BB-8 Fleece Hat It is a little earlier than normal this year, but the town is in full Holiday mode already. Gigi & I spent all of the 13th making victorian ornaments to be used inside the museum. Sunday was spent decorating the inside of the museum. Monday the Friends of Dahlonega Gold Museum came together to decorate the outside of the building & grounds. The black iron railings on the grounds were wrapped with garland & white fairy lights. Every few feet a crimson accent bow was added. On the heavy iron gate we added festive garland, gold & crimson ornaments, and deep burgundy bows & ribbons. COME VISIT & TAKE YOUR HOLIDAY PICTURES! Wouldn't the gate be a fantastic HOLIDAY CARD? Yesterday the Square Closed to give the Kids & Adults a safe place to have fun, enter contests, & trick or treat. The Dahlonega Gold Museum & Friends of the Dahlonega Gold Museum worked together to get great prizes from local merchants for the Costume Contest. Check out some pictures from the night!

HOWEVER due to all the requests we have decided that YOU can have a tour any time during the year if you have 10 or more individuals who would like to take the tour. The museum & Friends need a minimum of 2 weeks notice to set up a special tour.
I really have to laugh. Most of the people I interact with do know that I am an artist. They occasionally ask me what I am currently working on or what my favorite medium is. And then there are the special requests... Like this one- a friend is part of an organization that wanted to give an appreciation award to a sweet potato farmer (or farmers). He thought it would be wonderful to have a trophy made with a sweet potato on top- so off he went to purchase an artificial sweet potato. Oddly, you can't buy a faux yam. Yes you can get all sorts of regular potatoes, onions, squash, peppers, carrots, & such... BUT NO SWEET POTATOES!!!!!!!!! DRUMROLL- I needed to make a sweet potato. So here it is. The shape was first carved from re-claimed styrofoam. It was then covered in paperclay, painted, & varnished.
Fall is here! Time for rich golds, oranges, & reds to begin to appear in the trees. The museum is getting a jump start on the Autumn Splendor by having a touch of fall INSIDE! Here is a peek at the front of the Museum!
Time to VOTE for this great SCARECROW in the GO GREEN category! VOTE HERE http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/scarecrows
Each year the town of Dahlonega & the surrounding county comes alive with scarecrows! Funny ones, silly ones, clever ones & even traditional ones. Our women's club uses the entry fee for having a scarecrow to make needed upgrades to our woefully underfunded library. Last year I made Mike the Miner for the Friends of the Dahlonega Gold Museum & a pair of Square Dances for Gold Country Squares (square dance club). This year I'm only adding to Mike- he gets a faithful Donkey named 'Danny'. Ken made me the base (a sawhorse) and I began the donkey about a week ago. HE IS DONE NOW! BEHOLD DANNY DONKEY! Yeah- I know that was corny- but I could not resist. Danny's head is carved styrofoam, his hears are fabric, his body is an old battered metal garbage can (thank you Dana & Bob), his saddlebags are milk jugs. A mane out of yarn finishes him up.
The face painting took about 30 minutes to do- mostly because the humid air was slowing down the paint drying. Driving to the dance I think startled a bunch of native Dahlonega folks.
